So, it's been far too long without a post, and I apologize for that, we're still new to this. So, today we split off into focus classes; Kerry took all the kids that wanted to learn programming and ran a RobotC 101 class, Jasper and Chris W. took all the wanna be designers and builders and introduced them more thoroughly to VEX Robotics, and I took all the loggers and taught them the care and feeding of the Engineering Log. Hopefully by Thursday I will have 7316A's log from last year to use as an example.
Aside from the mini-classes, teams worked independently in groups brainstorming and designing their robots, I resurfaced parts of the website, and Alex worked on the Makerbot. Our goal with the Makerbot is to successfully scan a 3-D object (in this case, a skull) and print out a scale model. Currently, we are having issues, so Alex is fiddling with that. Pretty quiet club meeting, we had Cheddar Chex Mix and soda.

So imagine our shock when ten new freshmen walked into Room 162! The pictures above were taken during our introductions and welcoming 'speeches'. I write speeches, but not many of us are very publicly speaking inclined. So mostly officers making beginning of the year remarks and Mr. Spak giving his annual Club Manifesto speech. Once that was done, we began discussing who wanted to do robotics this year. Eight out of the ten rookies wanted in.
Last year, we decided teams should be no more than six people; 1-2 designers, 1-2 programmers, 1 logger, 1 driver, 1-2 builders and 1-2 scouts. One person could fill multiple positions, or one person could be trained to fill only one position. We didn't want more than 2 rookies per team if we could avoid it, and we wanted at least one veteran on every team. This may or may not cause our previously planned teams to break up, so that is first order of business next week. We will meet again next Tuesday; we decided to move straight into pre-competition season meetings this year (Tuesdays in addition to Thursdays) and hopefully soon we will move into competition meetings (3:30 - 6:00 as opposed to 3:30 - 5:00). Stay posted for team selections! -Erica Kraus Club Secretary |
